Re: Retirement Announcement – Nora Gillespie

We are writing to let you know that Nora Gillespie, our esteemed Senior Legal Counsel, will be retiring on June 30, 2022.

Nora started at the University of Toronto in 2004 after having been a partner in a national law firm where she had advised the University and other clients both in the private and public sectors. During her practice she advocated for clients at all levels of the courts in Ontario including at the Supreme Court of Canada on significant constitutional cases. Throughout her career both as external and internal counsel, Nora has unreservedly given the University and its communities her expertise and her unwavering commitment to delivering exemplary legal advice. She has brought common sense, quality, integrity, and a dry sense of humour to everything she worked on at the University. Nora has helped us to find very good answers to a steady stream of difficult, complex, and often novel challenges while providing a wealth of institutional knowledge and memory. Nora played an integral role in the development and negotiation of countless University of Toronto policies, including the modernization of the Memorandum of Agreement in the SJAC process and changes to the Policy and Procedures on Academic Appointments that led to the creation of the teaching stream professoriate. Nora’s impact on the University of Toronto has been immense, and her successor will have big shoes to fill.

On behalf of the University of Toronto, we would like to thank Nora for her commitment and service for 18 exemplary years. I hope that you will join us in wishing her happiness, health, and a long and fulfilling retirement.

Announcements will be made shortly with information about opportunities to celebrate Nora’s retirement.
