Re: President Gertler on the Importance of Investing in Science (PDAD&C #15)

In a meeting with the Toronto Star’s Editorial Board, President Gertler took advantage of the celebration of U of T’s continued position as the top Canadian university in the most recent Times Higher Education World University Rankings to call for greater investment in Canada’s research foundation.

In his op-ed, President Gertler underscores that U of T, along with the entire Canadian university community, is encouraging the government to adopt the recommendations of the Canada’s Fundamental Science Review Panel, also known as the Naylor Report. The Report sets out what the Star calls “a sensible roadmap” to rectify the recent slippage of Ottawa’s support for independent, basic science, and to reinvest in our research community so that Canada remains at the forefront of international scholarship, which is critical to our national prosperity and well-being.

U of T continues to work closely with Universities Canada and U15 in a collaborative and concerted advocacy effort to drive the adoption of the Report. Further details on the campaign to involve faculty, staff, and students will be released shortly.
