Each December 6th, the University of Toronto community marks the National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women with events across the institution. In 2016, the University announced that a new award would be established to recognize students who have made distinctive contributions in the area of gender-based violence research and prevention.

We are pleased to announce that the call for applications for the Graduate and Undergraduate Award for Scholarly Achievement in the Area of Gender-Based Violence is now open. The two awards at $1,500 each are available annually – one for a graduate student and one for an undergraduate student. The Award is funded jointly by the Office of the Vice-President & Provost and the Office of the Vice-President, Human Resources & Equity.

Graduate Award

This graduate Award was established by the University of Toronto in memory of the 14 women who died tragically at the École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989. It is awarded annually to a graduate student, in any year of any program, who has demonstrated scholarly excellence in research focusing on understanding, prevention, and/or intervention in the area of violence against women and girls and/or against trans and gender non-binary people. 

Award amount: $1,500
Deadline: October 15, 2020

Undergraduate Award

This undergraduate Award was established by the University of Toronto in memory of the 14 women who died tragically at the École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989. It is awarded annually to an undergraduate student who demonstrates an interest and commitment to academic work and/or community or co-curricular involvement on issues of violence against women and girls and/or against trans and gender non-binary people. Interest and commitment may be demonstrated through academic studies, research, on- or off-campus projects related to issues of violence against women or other related activities. 

Award amount: $1,500
Deadline: October 15, 2020
