Re: Call for Nominations – U of T’s Teaching Excellence and Student Learning Awards (PDAD&C#19)

I am delighted to announce the Call for Nominations for the 2020-21 Teaching Excellence and Student Learning Awards. These University-wide awards recognize our strengths in teaching and learning, and celebrate the achievements of faculty and staff undertaking innovative activities.

The President’s Teaching Award (PTA)

The President’s Teaching Award honours excellence in teaching and significant contributions in educational leadership. I encourage nominations of colleagues whose achievements in these areas are truly outstanding. A selection committee chaired by the Vice-President & Provost will determine the PTA award winners.

  • PTA winners receive an annual professional development allowance of $10,000 for five years.
  • The University designates recipients as members of the Teaching Academy for a minimum period of five years.
  • Please visit the President’s Teaching Award page for information on the award and nomination guidelines.

Deadline for nominations is March 22, 2022. Inquiries about the PTA should be directed to:

Global Educator Award

The Vice-President, International and the Vice-President & Provost are pleased to offer the Global Educator Award. The Award recognizes faculty members who embody the University’s global mission and profile. They are effective teachers who both demonstrate and foster intercultural/global fluency — the ability to successfully operate and communicate within different cultural contexts — through pedagogies that reflect a diversity of perspectives and invite engagement from all students. Award recipients will be honoured at the annual Excellence in Teaching Reception held each fall.

  • Eligibility is open to all teaching-stream and tenure-stream faculty members in continuing appointments as of September 1, 2021. This includes pre-tenure and pre-continuing status faculty.
  • One award of $3,000 will be offered annually.
  • Please visit University of Toronto Global Educator Award page for information on the award and guidelines to prepare a nomination package.
  • The adjudication committee will be chaired by the Associate Vice-President and Vice-Provost, International Student Experience

Deadline for nominations is January 14, 2022. Inquiries about the Global Educator Award should be directed to: awards.provost@utoronto.ca

Early Career Teaching Award (ECTA)

The Early Career Teaching Award recognizes faculty members who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to student learning, pedagogical engagement, and teaching innovation. This award is open to Assistant Professors in the tenure stream and Assistant Professors in the teaching stream (in continuing positions). A selection committee chaired by the Vice-President & Provost (or Designate) will determine the award winners.

  • Eligible candidates must be within the first six years of their academic appointment, and have completed two years of teaching at the University of Toronto.
  • Up to four awards of $3,000 each will be offered annually.
  • Please visit the University of Toronto Early Career Teaching Award page for information on the award and guidelines to prepare a nomination package.

Deadline for nominations is January 14, 2022. Inquiries about the ECTA should be directed to: awards.provost@utoronto.ca.

University of Toronto Teaching Fellowships (UTTF)

The University of Toronto Teaching Fellowships provide funds for up to five faculty members in the teaching stream focused on supporting pedagogical innovation and research, and intended to promote emerging leaders. The Fellowship is an opportunity for faculty members to undertake a two-year teaching and learning project centered on either curriculum review or renewal, or course redesign/development, working closely with the Office of the Vice-Provost, Innovations in Undergraduate Education and the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation.

Note: Two (4) Fellowship positions are available during the 2021-2022 Fellowship intake cycle.

  • Over the course of the two-year Fellowship, Fellows will receive two half-course releases, $10,000 to support graduate student Research Assistants, and an additional $5,000 for professional development and further project support.
  • Please visit the University of Toronto Teaching Fellowships page for information and guidelines to prepare a nomination package.

Deadline for nominations is January 14, 2022. Inquiries about the UTTF should be directed to: awards.provost@utoronto.ca.
