Re: Call for Nominations – Advisory Committee for the Dean, Faculty of Dentistry (PDAD&C #70)

On June 30, 2022, Professor Daniel Haas will complete his term as Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry. Professor Haas is completing his second five-year decanal term and is not eligible for reappointment.

As Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry since 2012, Professor Haas has been an exemplary leader and University citizen. Professor Haas has led the Faculty through several academic planning exercises, with the most recent update, titled Achieving Impact Through Excellence: 2019-22, placing a renewed focus on the Faculty’s key strategic directions of: enriching its educational programs through innovation and scholarship, providing outstanding clinical care in the community, and growing its research enterprise around targeted themes. Professor Haas’ accomplishments in these areas include enhancing the student experience through a renewed undergraduate curriculum, securing funding to support the consolidation and revitalization of the Faculty’s research infrastructure within a new and updated facility at 124 Edward Street, and developing a new academic leadership structure balanced around the tripartite foci of education, research, and clinical care.

Professor Haas has also overseen the continued growth of the Faculty’s clinical practice, which sees more than 90,000 visits a year and provides treatment to a large and diverse patient population, many of whom have difficulty accessing dental care elsewhere. Mostly recently, in light of COVID-19, Professor Haas is overseeing the creation of 40 enclosed dental operatories at the edge of St. George Campus in order to provide the extra capacity needed for students to continue their studies, and for patients to be seen, in an environment that enhances their experience and prepares practitioners for the future.

Professor Haas has been a consultative and collaborative leader, and his dedication to excellence in all its forms has situated the Faculty for continued success in the years to come.
