Re: Call for Nominations – Advisory Committee for the Dean, Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering (PDAD&C #83)

On June 30, 2019, Professor Cristina Amon will complete her term as Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering. Professor Amon is not eligible for reappointment.

As Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, Professor Amon has been an exceptional visionary and an inspirational leader, empowering the Faculty to become one of the world’s top engineering schools. Through her efforts in outreach and strategic recruitment, along with her unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion, the Faculty has doubled not only the percentage of first-year women undergraduate students to 40%, but also the percentage of women faculty. Under Professor Amon’s leadership, the Faculty has excelled on many fronts, including: fostering collaborative research through the establishment of 11 multidisciplinary research centres and institutes; recruiting and supporting outstanding students and faculty; launching innovative educational programming including new majors, minors, certificates, and emphases – more than half of all undergraduates now complete a minor or certificate prior to graduation; promoting the Faculty so that it is recognized as a leader on the international stage; ensuring the sustainability and strength of the Faculty’s resource structure. This spring marked an impressive and significant achievement for the Faculty – the opening of the Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship (MCEIE), a collaborative, world-class facility for multidisciplinary research institutes and experiential student learning. Professor Amon has had a profound impact on the Faculty, creating a culture of innovation and research excellence that will continue to empower and define future generations of engineers.

In accordance with Section 60 of the Policy on Appointment of Academic Administrators, I am writing to call for the nomination of individuals to serve on the Committee that will advise on the appointment of a new Dean.

  • One to three students of the Faculty;
  • The Dean of the School of Graduate Studies or representative;
  • A librarian, where appropriate;
  • Two or three other qualified scholars from within or outside this University, but outside of the Faculty;
  • In addition, the Committee may include an alumnus/a, a member of the administrative staff, and a senior member of the appropriate professional community.

The Advisory Committee will begin meeting in the summer term. Nominations for the Committee should be submitted to the Office of the Vice-President & Provost by Friday, May 11 via the online form.
