Re: Agreement on Revisions to the Policy and Procedures on Employment Conditions of Part-time Faculty (PDAD&C #79)

We are very pleased to announce that the University administration and University of Toronto Faculty Association [UTFA] have reached an agreement on a proposed revision to the Policy and Procedures on Employment Conditions of Part-time Faculty, which has not been comprehensively reviewed since 1976,for recommendation to Governing Council. The proposed changes to the Policy modernize the terms and conditions of employment for part-time faculty members at the University of Toronto and reflect the important role they play at the University. The changes include:

  • Professorial rank and title for part-time faculty in the teaching stream (bringing them in line with other appointed faculty)
  • A review in the 6th year of employment within the same unit at the University of Toronto leading, if successful, to a continuing appointment.

The agreement to revise the Policy was approved by the UTFA Council on May 20, 2020.  Pending approval of the revised Policy by the Governing Council in the fall of 2020, the revised Policy will take effect January 1, 2021.

We will reach out to all part-time faculty members in the summer to ensure they and the heads of their academic units are aware of the proposed changes. As soon as the proposed changes receive approval, all part-time faculty will receive individualized letters communicating how the changes will affect them.  Tools and supports for academic administrators and academic HR staff will be available from the Office of the Vice-Provost, Faculty & Academic Life to support the transition to the revised Policy.
