Each year on December 6, the University of Toronto community marks the National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women with events across the institution. Last year, the University announced that a new award would be established to recognize students who have made distinctive contributions in the area of gender-based violence research and prevention.

We are pleased to announce that the Graduate and Undergraduate Award for Scholarly Achievement in the Area of Gender-Based Violence is now open. The two awards of $1,500 each are available annually – one for a graduate student and one for an undergraduate student. The Award is funded jointly by the Office of the Vice-President & Provost and the Office of the Vice-President, Human Resources & Equity.


Graduate Award

This graduate Award was established by the University of Toronto in memory of the 14 women who died tragically at the École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989. It is awarded annually to a graduate student, in any year of any program, who has demonstrated scholarly excellence in research focusing on understanding, prevention, and/or intervention in the area of violence against women and girls and/or against trans and gender non-binary people.

Award: $1,500
Deadline: April 1, 2017


Undergraduate Award

This undergraduate Award was established by the University of Toronto in memory of the 14 women who died tragically at the École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989. It is awarded annually to an undergraduate student who demonstrates an interest and commitment to academic work and/or community or co-curricular involvement on issues of violence against women and girls and/or against trans and gender non-binary people. Interest and commitment may be demonstrated through academic studies, research, on- or off-campus projects related to issues of violence against women, or other related activities.

Award: $1,500
Deadline: April 1, 2017
