Re: Extension of Professor Ryan McClelland as Interim Dean, Faculty of Music (PDAD&C #41)

I am pleased to announce that the Agenda Committee of Academic Board has approved an extension to the appointment of Professor Ryan McClelland as Interim Dean, Faculty of Music.

Professor McClelland served as the Faculty of Music’s Acting Dean from June 2023 to December 2024 and has served as Interim Dean since January 2025. Professor McClelland has led exceptionally well during a period of transition, and I am thankful for his service to the Faculty of Music, and the University of Toronto.

Professor McClelland received his MMus in piano performance and his PhD in music theory from Indiana University. He joined the University of Toronto in 2004 and was promoted to Professor in 2015. Professor McClelland’s research interests include rhythmic-metric theory, tonal analysis, and performance studies. He has published on these subjects in journals including Music Theory Spectrum and Music Analysis as well as in essay collections devoted to Brahms and Schubert. Author of a monograph on Brahms’s music and a co-authored analysis textbook, he more recently co-edited the Cambridge Companion to Rhythm.

Professor McClelland’s term is extended from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026, or until a new Dean is appointed, whichever is first.
