I am delighted to announce the Call for Nominations for the 2018-19 Teaching Excellence and Student Learning Awards. These University-wide awards recognize our strengths in teaching and learning, and celebrate the achievements of faculty and staff undertaking innovative activities.

The President’s Teaching Award (PTA)

The President’s Teaching Award honours excellence in teaching and significant contributions in educational leadership. I encourage nominations of colleagues whose achievements in these areas are truly outstanding. A selection committee chaired by the Vice-President & Provost will determine the PTA award winners.

  • PTA winners receive an annual professional development allowance of $10,000 for five years.
  • The University designates recipients as members of the Teaching Academy for a minimum period of five years.

  • Nominators may wish to register for and attend a roundtable discussion, Effective Strategies for Preparing a Teaching Award Nomination, hosted by the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation (CTSI) on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, 3 – 4:30 pm.

The Early Career Teaching Award (ECTA)

The Early Career Teaching Award recognizes faculty members who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to student learning, pedagogical engagement, and teaching innovation. This award is open to Assistant Professors in the tenure stream and Assistant Professors in the teaching stream (in continuing positions). A selection committee chaired by the Vice-President & Provost (or Designate) will determine the ECTA award winners.

  • Eligible candidates must be within the first six years of their academic appointment, and have completed two years of teaching at the University of Toronto.
  • Up to four awards of $3,000 each will be offered annually.

The University of Toronto Teaching Fellowships (UTTF)

The University of Toronto Teaching Fellowships provide funds for up to five faculty members in the teaching stream focused on supporting pedagogical innovation and research, and intended to promote emerging leaders. The Fellowship is an opportunity for faculty members to undertake a two-year teaching and learning project centered on either curriculum review or renewal, or course redesign/development, working closely with the Office of the Vice-Provost, Innovations in Undergraduate Education and the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation (CTSI).

Note: Two (2) Fellowship positions are available during the 2019-2020 Fellowship intake cycle.

  • Over the course of the two-year Fellowship, Fellows will receive two half-course releases, $10,000 to support graduate student Research Assistants, and an additional $5,000 for professional development and further project support.

The Northrop Frye Award – Faculty

The Northrop Frye Award (Faculty) recognizes those individuals or team of individuals who have enhanced the student experience through innovative curriculum, co-curricular learning, and pedagogical contributions inside and outside the classroom with a special focus on the integration of research and teaching. Detailed information about the nomination package is still to be determined. Please visit the Northrop Frye Awards page on the Awards of Excellence website for more information.

The Northrop Frye Award – Staff

The Northrop Frye Award (Staff) recognizes a staff member or team of staff members who have made significant contributions to the quality of the learning environment for students. This includes enhancing the learning environment in classrooms, libraries, or academic programs, and providing exemplary support in re-imagining the undergraduate experience.
