Re: Call for Nominations – Advisory Committee for the Vice-Principal, Academic & Dean, University of Toronto Scarborough (PDAD&C #28)

On June 30, 2024, Professor William Gough will complete his term as Vice-Principal, Academic & Dean, University of Toronto Scarborough. Professor Gough is not eligible for reappointment.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Gough for his leadership during his term as Vice-Principal Academic & Dean. After serving as departmental Chair, Vice-Dean Faculty, Vice-Dean Graduate Education & Program Development and Interim Vice-Principal Academic & Dean, Professor Gough began his term as the Vice-Principal Academic & Dean of U of T Scarborough in July 2016. In all these leadership roles he has been a strong facilitator for UTSC’s dynamic contributions within the tri-campus system, including leadership in governance reform; development of doctoral and professional graduate programs based at UTSC; and creation of combined degree programs which provide access to professional graduate programs for UTSC students.

In his role as Dean, Professor Gough has been a steadfast advocate for the inclusive excellence priorities established under UTSC’s strategic plan. He has championed Indigenous initiatives, in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations, and guided implementation of the very successful Pathway to Parity program, a multi-year initiative to increase the number of Black and Indigenous identifying faculty, as well as the Inclusive Excellence postdoctoral program.

His commitment to making a U of T education accessible, has resulted in several exciting initiatives for the campus. These include the Get Finished program designed to assist students with degree completion; bridging programs with Seneca, Centennial and Loyalist Colleges; residence bursaries for rural students; the UTSC Transition Year Program; and an outreach strategy for the Pickering, Ajax and Whitby region. The above contributions, together with his leadership in the areas of quality education and strategic enrolment management, have strengthened UTSC’s standing as a place of transformative learning, scholarly prominence and inclusive citizenship.

In accordance with Section 62(c) of the Policy on Appointment of Academic Administrators, we are writing to call for the nominations of individuals to serve on the Committee that will advise on the appointment of the Vice-Principal, Academic & Dean.

The Policy mandates the composition of the Advisory Committee as follows:

  • Three to five members of the teaching staff of the College or Division;
  • One to three students of the College or Division;
  • The Dean of the School of Graduate Studies or representative;
  • A librarian, where appropriate;
  • Two or three other qualified scholars from within or outside this University, but outside of the College or Division;
  • In addition, the Committee may include an alumnus/a, a member of the administrative staff, and a qualified individual from outside the University.

The Advisory Committee will begin meeting in the coming months. Nominations for the Advisory Committee should be submitted to the Office of the Vice-President & Principal, UTSC, by Wednesday, April 5, 2023, via the online form.
