Re: Appointment of Professor Ryan McClelland as Acting Dean, Faculty of Music (PDAD&C #42)

I am pleased to announce that the Agenda Committee of Academic Board has approved the appointment of Professor Ryan McClelland as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Music from June 29 to September 30, 2023, while the current Dean, Professor Ellie Hisama, is on short-term medical leave.

Professor McClelland has served as the Faculty of Music’s Associate Dean, Academic and Student Affairs since 2013. He received his MMus in piano performance and his PhD in music theory from Indiana University, where he also served for two years as a Visiting Lecturer. He joined the University of Toronto in 2004 as Assistant Professor and was promoted to Professor in 2015.

Professor McClelland’s research interests include rhythmic-metric theory, tonal analysis, and performance studies. He has published on these subjects in journals including Music Theory Spectrum and Music Analysis as well as in essay collections devoted to Brahms and Schubert. Author of a monograph on Brahms’s music and a co-authored analysis textbook, he recently co-edited the Cambridge Companion to Rhythm.

Please join me in thanking Professor McClelland for taking on this short-term acting role at the Faculty of Music.
