Re: Appointment of Professor William A. Gough as Interim Vice-Principal, Academic & Dean, University of Toronto, Mississauga (PDAD&C #17)
We are delighted to announce that the Agenda Committee of Academic Board has approved the appointment of Professor William A. Gough as Interim Vice-Principal, Academic and Dean at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) for a one-year term from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025. The Advisory Committee to search for UTM’s next Dean will be convened next year.
Professor Gough brings a wealth of experience from his tenure at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC), where he served as Vice-Principal Academic and Dean for eight years, following a one-year interim appointment in the same role. Prior to this, he held the positions of Vice-Dean Faculty, and Vice-Dean Graduate Education & Program Development.
In addition to his responsibilities at the Dean’s Office at UTSC, Professor Gough served as Governor on U of T’s Governing Council Executive and Elections’ Committees. He also contributed to numerous University committees including Joint Programs with Centennial College, Concurrent Teachers Education Program, and the Tri-Campus Geography Council.
Throughout his administrative career, Professor Gough has been a thoughtful, compassionate leader, and has been a steadfast advocate of inclusive excellence and reconciliation.
Professor Gough has been a faculty member at the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough since 1993. He holds a BSc in Physics from the University of Waterloo, an MSc in Physics from the University of Toronto, and a PhD in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences from McGill University. Professor Gough is a preeminent researcher in climate change, focusing on the Eastern Arctic, Southwestern Ontario, and Toronto. His expertise includes climate change impact assessment, numerical ocean and climate modelling, and air quality. The Canadian Association of Geographers honoured him for Excellence in Teaching and Service to Geography.
