Re: Tuition Initiatives for Indigenous Students (PDAD&C #9)
In the spirit of building meaningful relationships between U of T and First Nations communities and recognizing our colonial history, the University of Toronto is introducing the following tuition initiatives for Indigenous students:
- As of this Fall, the University will cover tuition for current and future Indigenous students enrolled in OSAP-eligible undergraduate, graduate and professional credit-based programs from the nine First Nations communities whose territories U of T is on or to which it is adjacent:
- Alderville First Nation
- Curve Lake First Nation
- Hiawatha First Nation
- Nation Huronne-Wendat/Huron-Wendat First Nation
- Mississauga First Nation
- Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation
- Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation
- Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte (Tyendinaga Mohawk)
- Six Nations of the Grand River.
- All other Indigenous students from Canada will be eligible for the domestic Ontario tuition fee, regardless of where they live.
- In recognition of the Jay Treaty of 1794, which acknowledges the colonial nature of the border between Canada and the United States, the University will offer the domestic Ontario tuition rate to any Indigenous or Native American students from the continental United States.
Further details, including the application process for current and prospective students, will be available as of Wednesday, October 11 on the University Registrar’s Office website. The Office of Indigenous Initiatives and First Nations House will work with partners within each Nation to verify students’ eligibility. The University Registrar’s Office is currently co-ordinating implementation with divisions. Please contact university.registrar@utoronto.ca if you have questions.
