Re: Update on the Vice-Principal Academic & Dean, University of Toronto Scarborough (PDAD&C #53)

As set out in my earlier update from April 24, 2026, Karin Ruhlandt has been on leave from her role as Vice-Principal Academic & Dean, University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) for personal reasons. After careful consideration, Professor Ruhlandt has decided to resign from this role effective June 30, 2026. She remains a tenured faculty member of the Department of Physical & Environmental Sciences, UTSC.

Professor Ruhlandt joined UTSC from Syracuse University after an extensive international search. In her previous role she served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for eight years.  At UTSC, Professor Ruhlandt advanced several key institutional priorities, including the development of interdisciplinary program innovation and enhancement of the student experience. She played an important role in hiring a cohort of talented faculty members and advancing UTSC’s Strategic Enrolment Management priorities. This included the growth of experiential learning opportunities, the UTSC Arts & Science Co-op initiative, expanding curricular offerings in the health and life sciences, and contributions to substantial domestic enrolment growth in the sciences – the largest domestic growth achieved by any institution in Ontario. Professor Ruhlandt deeply appreciates the opportunity to serve the U of T community and to work alongside a such a dedicated and talented group of people.

Please join me in thanking Professor Ruhlandt for her dedicated service to UTSC as Vice-Principal Academic & Dean.

A separate announcement regarding the appointment of an interim dean following Professor Ruhlandt’s resignation will follow.
