Re: Update on the Office of the Vice-Provost, Innovations in Undergraduate Education (PDAD&C #39)
I am pleased to announce that the Office of the Vice-Provost, Innovations in Undergraduate Education (OVPIUE) will be renamed the Office of the Vice-Provost, Teaching & Learning, effective immediately. Updates to websites, systems, and related materials will be implemented over the coming months.
This new name reflects both the evolution of the work and the impact this portfolio has had across the University of Toronto.
While the name is changing, the mandate of the portfolio remains the same: to advance high-quality, evidence-based, and technology-enabled teaching and learning across the University, in close partnership with divisions and institutional colleagues. The new name more clearly captures the breadth of this work and the integrated role of teaching, curriculum, data and analytics, and digital infrastructure in shaping student academic success.
The work of this portfolio spans several interconnected priorities, and the team under Vice-Provost Susan McCahan is looking forward to continuing to advance these priorities in deep collaboration with divisional and institutional partners.
Teaching Awards & Grants
Recognizing and supporting excellence and innovation in teaching. Initiatives such as the Learning & Education Advancement Fund (LEAF) enhance the learning experiences of more than 50,000 students annually.
Analytics and Student Success
Advancing academic and learning analytics through integrated data tools and dashboards that provide insights into student success, course performance, and learning patterns. This includes customized data for each first-entry undergraduate division to inform curriculum, program design, and student success strategies.
Digital Transformation
Developing and enhancing systems that support the teaching and learning, such as the Course Information System (CIS), Student Advising System (SAS), and the Student Engagement & Support Ecosystem (SESE), to better serve students, faculty, and staff.
Curriculum Development
Partnering with academic units to design and evaluate programs and learning outcomes, support curriculum alignment and mapping, and facilitate planning processes through tailored tools, workshops, and retreats.
Teaching Initiatives
Leading institutional efforts to advance experiential learning, undergraduate research, and emerging pedagogies. This includes initiatives such as the Undergraduate Research Hub, the Experiential Learning Hub, and the review of the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation, bringing together the U of T learning community and identifying opportunities to scale impact across divisions.
Through this integrated work, the Office of the Vice-Provost, Teaching & Learning will continue to enhance the quality, accessibility, and impact of teaching and learning across the University of Toronto. The Office is grateful for the ongoing collaboration of colleagues across the University and looks forward to continuing this work together under this new name.
