I am delighted to announce that the Agenda Committee of Academic Board has approved the reappointment of Professor Trevor Young as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and the Executive Committee of Governing Council has approved his reappointment as Vice-Provost, Relations with Health Care Institutions for a second term from January 1, 2020 to June 30, 2025.

Under Professor Young’s leadership, the Faculty of Medicine has seen tremendous success over the past four years. He has promoted excellence at every level and has fostered thriving and mutually beneficial relationships with the University’s numerous affiliated hospitals. Professor Young’s key accomplishments at the Faculty include: strengthening our partnership with the Toronto Academic Health Science Network (TAHSN) and more than 30 affiliates across the Greater Toronto Area; advancing the Faculty’s position as the lead contributor to Ontario’s regulated health professional workforce; and making significant progress in areas of equity, diversity, and inclusion through his support of new programs and initiatives, such as the Diversity Mentorship Program and the Black Student Application Program. As Dean, Professor Young has been a champion for teaching innovation through the development of several new professional Masters programs, and the new Foundations Curriculum in the MD program that provides students with highly integrated laboratory, classroom, clinical, and community-engaged learning opportunities. Professor Young’s focus on collaboration, innovation, and excellence through equity has accelerated the Faculty as one of the world’s leading medical schools.

Prior to his appointment as Dean and Vice-Provost, Professor Young was the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine. He is also a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, and a Senior Scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Professor Young is an internationally recognized scholar renowned for his work on bipolar disorder and the molecular basis of mood disorders. He has received numerous awards, including the 2015 Colvin Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Mood Disorders Research from the Brain and Behaviour Research Foundation and the Heinz Lehmann Award from the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology for his outstanding contributions in the field.

Professor Young’s exceptional leadership, vision, and guidance will be vital to the Faculty’s continued success in the years ahead. Please join me in congratulating Professor Young on this appointment.

We will be consulting on the appointment of an Acting Dean and Acting Vice-Provost, Relations with Health Care Institutions from January 1, 2020 – June 30, 2020, when Professor Young will be taking six months of administrative leave. We will communicate further about that acting appointment over the coming months.
