Re: Appointment of Provostial Advisor on Computing, AI, and Data Science (PDAD&C #7)
I am pleased to report that Professor Cristina Amon will assume the role of Provostial Advisor on Computing, AI, and Data Science from October 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027.
In consultation with academic leaders, faculty members, students, and staff across the University, Professor Amon will lead the development of a strategic framework to guide the future of computing, artificial intelligence, and data science at the University of Toronto. This work will build upon the University’s internationally recognized strengths in computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, information studies, engineering, medicine, and related disciplines, as well as major institutional investments such as the Acceleration Consortium.
This initiative aligns with President Woodin’s commitment to advancing responsible AI adoption at scale, one of the University’s three Presidential Commitments.
The project will identify opportunities to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, academic programming, research excellence, and external engagement across the University. The goal is to identify a model that fosters greater collaboration across divisions and campuses, enhances U of T’s ability to attract leading scholars and students, strengthens partnerships with government and industry, and reinforces the University’s position as a global leader in computing, artificial intelligence, and data science.
Professor Amon’s work will assess emerging opportunities associated with AI for Science, interdisciplinary teaching and research, innovation, and commercialization. It will culminate in a report to the Vice-President and Provost with recommendations to support the University’s future academic planning in these rapidly evolving fields.
Professor Amon has exceptional experience in academic leadership, strategic planning, and institutional development. Through her distinguished service to the University, including as Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering and as Provostial Advisor on Residences, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing the University’s academic mission and fostering innovation across disciplines.
Consultation will begin shortly in Fall 2026. This project will be supported by an Advisory Committee. Nominations for the committee should be submitted to the Office of the Vice-President & Provost by October 15, 2026, via the online form.
