Re: Appointment of Professor Mason White as Dean, John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design (PDAD&C #35)
I am delighted to announce that the Agenda Committee of Academic Board has approved the appointment of Professor Mason White as Dean of the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design for a five-year term from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2031, after an extensive international search.   Â
Mason White is a Professor at the Daniels Faculty, where he has held a faculty appointment since 2005, and served as the Director of the MArch program, the Post-Professional MArch/MLA, and the Master of Urban Design. Professor White received his BArch from Virginia Tech and his MArch from Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and a founding Partner of Lateral Office, which has received numerous awards including notably the Canadian Architect Award of Merit, Gold Award from Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction, and Special Mention representing Canada at the Venice Biennale in Architecture. A sought-after researcher and active practitioner, his focus is on cold-climate architecture and urbanism,and he often collaborates with Indigenous partners on community empowering research and projects. He has been a primary investigator and collaborator on several major arts and tri-council grants with $2.4 million in funded research. He is also a founding editor of the journal Bracket, established in 2008.
Professor White’s work has been published in the Globe and Mail, Canadian Architect, Landscape Architecture Magazine, Architectural Record, Architect, Praxis, and Architectural Record. His writing has been published in Perspecta, New Geographies, Praxis, Kerb, OZ Journal, MONU, A+U, and 306090. He has lectured and exhibited work internationally across the United States, South America, Europe and Asia. He is a co-author of Many Norths: Spatial Practice in a Polar Territory and co-editor of Third Coast Atlas: Prelude to a Plan. Professor White has received four Faculty Design Awards from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and the Excellence in Education Award from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
