Re: Appointment of Professor Ryan McClelland as Acting Dean, Faculty of Music (PDAD&C #42)

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Ryan McClelland as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Music, from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. He will serve in this capacity during Professor Don McLean’s one-year administrative leave, prior to the commencement of Professor McLean’s second term as Dean of the Faculty of Music.

Professor McClelland has nearly three years’ experience as an academic administrator in the Faculty of Music. Nominators noted his sound judgement, diplomacy, and dedication to the Faculty. Professor McClelland is respected for his outstanding scholarship, commitment to undergraduate teaching and graduate supervision, background in performance, and proven record of academic administration.

In his current role as Associate Dean, Academic & Student Affairs, he has demonstrated a clear understanding of the both the academic and professional aspects of the Faculty. Professor McClelland has served on a number of Faculty of Music committees as well as University of Toronto committees and working groups.

Professor McClelland’s research area is Music Theory; his interests include rhythmic-metric theory, Schenkerian analysis, and performance studies. Author of a book and several articles on the music of Johannes Brahms, he is currently President of the American Brahms Society. Professor McClelland holds degrees from Indiana University (M.M., 1999 and Ph.D., 2004) and McGill University (B.Mus., 1997).

I am grateful that Professor McClelland has agreed to serve in this important role. Please join me in welcoming him.
