Re: Appointment of Professor Randall Hansen as Interim Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs (PDAD&C #93)

We are delighted to announce that the Agenda Committee of Academic Board has approved the appointment of Professor Randall Hansen as Interim Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs effective June 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018.

Professor Hansen received his DPhil in Politics from the University of Oxford in 1998. He taught at the Universities of London (Queen Mary) and Oxford (Merton) before coming to Toronto in 2005 as Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Immigration & Governance in the Department of Political Science. He was appointed to Full Professor in 2009.

Professor Hansen’s research interests include immigration and citizenship, eugenics and population policy, and the effect of war on civilian population. He is the author of four books (one co-authored), four edited books, two dozen peer-reviewed articles, and two dozen book chapters. His second book, Fire and Fury, was nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award (non-fiction). He is the recipient of grants from SSHRC, the British Academy, the Welcome Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service, and the Jean Monnet Programme (European Commission).

Professor Hansen has been Director of the Munk School’s Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (CERES) since 2011 and in that role has served on multiple committees and the Council of the Munk School. Under his leadership, CERES has thrived as a vital site for research and teaching on Europe, Russia, and Eurasia at a time of great upheaval. CERES has also launched a new, endowed Hellenic Studies Initiative. Professor Hansen has had a stellar career across three dimensions of research, teaching, and service and is highly regarded for his skills in building and maintaining relationships across and beyond the University.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Stephen Toope for his distinguished leadership of the Munk School. Since coming to the University in 2014, Professor Toope, a highly distinguished legal scholar, has done an outstanding job in furthering the School’s academic mission – in recruitment, in advancement, and in the development of international academic partnerships. We look forward to continuing to work with him as he assumes his new role as Vice Chancellor at Cambridge University in the autumn.
